Cover 3 is GreyComm Studio’s sports program featuring debate on sports issues ranging from Loyola athletics to pro sports such as the NFL and NBA. Rob Frederickson, the show’s creator, had the idea to combine his love for sports with his growing interest in television production. The name comes from the shows format, where three hosts discuss and debate current sports topics and is an allusion to football defensive formations.

Two years ago, Fredrickson came up with the idea to host a sports roundtable to discuss Loyola sports. Eventually as the show grew, topics were expanded to include not only Loyola athletics but all hot sports topics. He knew that in order to create a quality show, he needed to create a strong debate environment. This enviroment comes from the shows two co-hosts James Randazzo and Mike Valenti. He carefully picked these two as his co-hosts because of their strong sports knowledge and their fearlessness when debating sports issues.

Fredericksen credits Eric Strand, GreyComm’s General Manager, and Jay Dunmore, CEO for helping him get to where he is with the show. “Jay and Eric taught me so much. Without them I would have been lost from the broadcasting and production aspect of the program,” Fredricksen said.
The feedback for the show has been strong, and with each passing week it is clear that the show continues to grow into one of the station’s best and most popular. As the show continues to grow, Fredricksen hopes it can expand its coverage of sports here on the Evergreen campus in order to stay true to his original vision. As a final comment Fredricken stated, “We try to keep the show simple. Its just three guys talking about sports.”

As classes started to fill up on the morning of registration, I found myself unsure of what to take. With little options left for communications classes, I quickly chose to enroll in Video Production. I have had little to no experience with any type of shooting, producing, or editing any type of film. However, I decided to view this class as an opportunity and a chance to challenge myself to learn about another aspect of the communications field.

I was not sure what to expect walking into class that first day, but it was truly anything but boring. Dr. Chris Heidleberg, “Doc Chris”, our instructor spearheaded used his infamous high energy teaching style to spearhead class discussion about one of the main themes we were to cover for the semester: Video Production through “edutainment.”

According to Doc Chris, edutainment is being able to incorporate the knowledge of the classroom with compelling entertainment. As students, we were not only allowed to use our cell phones and social media in the classroom, but were encouraged to do so.

To compliment Doc Chris in the classroom Prof. Jay Dunmore steps in to lead the class in the hands on element of Video Production. Student Eric Loy says, “Prof. Jay really knows his stuff, and makes sure we understand it too. He’s a genius.” What can seem overwhelming at first, like setting up lighting, or editing with Final Cut Pro, Prof. Jay managed to teach in a way that made learning quick and easy. Although I knew little going into the class, I can say I will be coming out learning more than I ever thought in 13 short weeks.

Are you confused on current fashion trends? Seniors Jennifer Barthole and Tatiana Ferriera, members of GreyComm Studio’s Public Affairs department and founders of Style Stitch, an on-campus fashion TV segment created from their passion for fashion may be able to help you out.

Originally the girls collaborated with the Loyola Looks fashion club, but eventually decided to branch out, making the show decisively their own, with assistance from Kavanaugh Oktavec as their model and Jacqueline McCormick as their host. Each episode centers on a theme with the goal being to help Loyola students keep up on a new fashion trends.

Putting together and producing these episodes is no minor feat and requires several steps of preparation. All of the girls meet three to five times before filing each episode to work on fresh looks and commentary. The models must be fitted for their outfits, and the script finalized before any filming can take place.

The episodes are not long, usually lasting about five minutes. The segments are short and to the point, which makes it easier for the viewer to get some quick ideas on popular fashions. Their blog, also titled “Style Stitch”, is another great way to stay updated on current trends and get some inspiration for creating your own unique style.
